getting to the udvar-hazy center

My boyfriend and I will be travelling to DC, for two weeks in December. We are really excited about going to the udvar hazy center. From looking at the other posts on the topic it seems there is no direct transportation to the center. We are staying at the river inn in foggy bottom, can anyone give me the best way of getting to and from the museum.

Is a taxi our best bet or can we use the metro?

I just did this on my trip there. Take the Orange line Metro to West Falls Church and pick up the Washington Flyer Shuttle. Get a round-trip ticket (you%26#39;ll get it when you arrive at Dulles) so you can get back. When you get to Dulles, there will be a shuttle to the museum (50 cents each way). I don%26#39;t remember where exactly, but when you get to Dulles the agent can tell you. It%26#39;s right where the bus leaves you but it has a stop number. Definitely don%26#39;t take a taxi...it%26#39;ll cost over $50.

You could take a taxi but it won%26#39;t be cheap. As to using Metro, you have 2 options--take the 5A Metrobus to Dulles. It runs every 40 minutes (see: www.wmata.com for more info). Or you could take Metro rail to West Falls Church and take the Washington Flyer bus to Dulles (for more info: www.washfly.com). This bus runs every half hour at 15 and 45 past the hour. Once at Dulles, you can take a shuttle over to Udvar-Hazy. For more info on that:

You have a couple of options. A cab would certainly be the most direct, but would run about $60 one-way.

Virginia Regional Transit provides direct bus service between Dulles Airport and the Udvar-Hazy Center. You can get to Dulles via a Metro and Bus combination, or to Dulles via SuperShuttle van service.

It%26#39;s too bad -- when the Center opened the Smithsonian ran a bus between it and the original Air %26amp; Space Museum on the Mall, but they dropped it for lack of interest.

Well you could take a cab. About $50.00 or more

Or for the cheapest way. Take the 5A Shuttle Bus to Dulles Airport and there is a shuttle bus from the Center that picks you up from the airport for $.50 each way each person, that will take you to the Center. It runs every hour from 10am- 5:30 pm. Last shuttle service leaves the center at 5:30pm.

Call (540) 338-1610 or e-mail: kim@vatransit.org for questions regarding the shuttle service.

In addittion to the options posted above, you could take the metro to vienna and take a taxi from there. That is the closest metro station. A taxi from there will cost you about $25 each way.

Where is the taxi stand at the Vienna Metro station? Are taxis always waiting? Just wondering because all the times I%26#39;ve been at Vienna, I never saw the taxi stand. Maybe it%26#39;s in a part of the station area that I don%26#39;t use?

Thanks to everyone for the great advice. We will definately be taking the metro and/or bus to get there.

I was also thinking of calling my hotel and seeing if they have a shuttle service to Dulles. Does anyone know if hotels will do this?

Taxis are on the Vienna side of the metro. I don%26#39;t think they on the Fairfax side.

Most major hotels in the area usually have shuttle service to Reagan National. Some might have it to Dulles. But it is very rare.

Thanks for the info on the Vienna Metro station taxi stand--very helpful. However, you didn%26#39;t say if taxis are always waiting--are they? When recommending taking a taxi from there, it%26#39;s important to know that there will be taxis waiting. If it%26#39;s a hit and miss kind of thing, then, IMO, it%26#39;s not worth recommending it--especially if someone ends up having a very long wait for a taxi.
