I know this has been asked a thousand times, but I need help choosing a hotel. My husband and I are coming to Washington September 16 for 4 days. My husband has never been so we plan on hitting as many of the major tourist spots as possible. We have been struggling trying to decide on a hotel and hoped you all could help.
We are flying in to BWI and plan on taking the train to Washington. Since we will be without a car, we are relying on the Metro to get us around. We would like to keep the hotel room cost to under $300 is possible.
We are in our early 30%26#39;s and although we aren%26#39;t much into clubs and whatnot, it would be nice to have restaurants and laid-back bars near the hotel. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good place to stay?

You won%26#39;t be able to find a hotel that meets your needs for $300 for four nights in the District. Maybe you might find one at that rate in the outlying suburbs, but then you%26#39;d be trading convenience and security.
Have you done any searches yet for hotels, or checked previous postings in this forum?

HI, MAISEY --
I did some price-checking for you and am going to suggest 2 very different possibilities in the $200/night range so you%26#39;ll have more money to spend on other things :-) I%26#39;ll leave it to you to decide which-- the hotel itself or location for nightlife -- means more to you two
** The Renaissance Mayflower is available for those dates at $186/night through Orbitz; a large (660 rooms) full service, historic hotel -- now part of the Marriott chain -- near the White House which has been getting generally quite positive reviews of late here at TA:

** The Jurys Normandy Inn for $205/night from this Irish hotel chain%26#39;s own website:

A much smaller property (with just 75 rooms, it%26#39;s almost 1/10 the size of the Mayflower) which feels European in nature -- indeed, you%26#39;ll typically find a number of European guests tere -- because (a) it%26#39;s not a full-service property, .e.g, there is no bar or restaurant on the premises altho%26#39; breakfast is served in an iniviting lounge/parlor area, and (b) the rooms (which give you your own mini-fridge %26amp; coffee maker) are ';cozier'; than most American hotels.
Great location on a safe, residential side street off Connecticut Ave above Dupont Circle, so (assuming you%26#39;re not of limited mobility/stamina) you%26#39;re within comfortable walking distance of a wide variety of shops, restaurants, clubs %26amp; bars to be found in the Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan %26amp; Woodley Park. It%26#39;s my favorite place to stay in DC when not indulging in a bigger splurge, but perhaps you wish something a bit morre posh

Yikes, drwong -- here I thought she meant $300/night, but in reading her post again, I think you are right :-/ Perhaps one can find a decent room in Jackson, MS for $75/night... coming from NYC, that didn%26#39;t occur to me!
I%26#39;m sorry I was unclear. I did mean $300/night, not for the whole trip.
Hi:
I found quite a few things available for your dates. Personally, I agree with CockleCove that something around Dupont Circle would probably be a good choice for you. You%26#39;d have to take the metro to get to the main tourist areas, but it%26#39;s a nice area at night. There are lots of restaurants to choose from in the area.
Some things that came up that might work for you:
The Hilton Washington (1919 Connecticut Avenue, NW) - $199/night
Hotel Rouge (1315 16th Street, NW) - $259/night
Just looking around for othe possibilities in other areas, I also saw the Hotel Washington (15th and Pennsylvania, NW) for an avg. price of $161/night on travelocity. This hotel is very conveniently located to the National Mall/monuments and has a rooftop bar with a view of the city. I toured several years ago and remember the rooms being small, but the location is very good. There are also a few decent restaurants around (Ceiba, TenPenh, Old Ebbitt Grill).
Hope this helps. Please post back if you narrow down your choices and want opinions. Otherwise, enjoy your stay!
I stayed at the Jurys Washington which was an ideal location virtually on top of a metro station. There are lots of restaurants nearby. the rooms was not huge but perfectly OK.
