stuff to do around Omni Shoreham?

Hi- My husband and I are first timers to dc and will be arriving to the omni a little after 7 pm on a monday coming up in a few weeks. Any suggestions for dinner or other stuff to do with out straying too far that first night? Any other suggestions welcomed as we don%26#39;t know the surroundings especially where the omni is located.

thanks

You are in the Woodley Park/Adams Morgan Zoo area. Very nice. More residential than ';touristy'; but there are always people visiting and staying in the surrounding hotels.

-You could go to the zoo which is about 5 blocks away I would say. You could walk there. It%26#39;s not just for kids. Adults enjoy it as well.

RESTAURANTS: What type of cuisine would you prefer? There are quite a few in this area.

-Nearest Metro is Woodley Park (red line). You have access to everything in downtown by using the metro. Most of the museums and the mall area are on the Orange/Blue/Yellow line. You would just transfer at Metro Center to the orange line or blue line and get on the either the New Carrollton train or the Largo train then get off at the Smithsonian station. All of your museums are here basically. You have the holocaust, National American History, Air %26amp; Space, Natural History, etc.) Metro will be your friend.

Two suggestions for dinner by your hotel: the Lebanese Taverna (fabulous Greek-style appetizers %26amp; tasty pita bread -- we usually skip the entree menu entirely!) or Petits-Plats for French bistro fare; PP offers an ';early bird'; dinner which they also serve between 9-10 PM Sunday-Thursday. More info, including menus, can be found at:

An evening stroll down Connecticut Avenue, over the softly illuminated Taft Bridge which spans a section of lush Rock Creek Park, past some intriguing embassies %26amp; vintage residential apartment buildings -- e.g., take a look up at the fanciful gargoyles adorning the parapets at 2101 Conn. Ave -- and on down to the lively (but safe) Dupont Circle area can be a fine way to end at least one of the days you%26#39;ll be in town.

I second Cocklecove%26#39;s restaurant suggestions if you want to stay very close to the hotel.

Alternatively, if you get a second wind, you may want to head into Adams Morgan. There are lots of decent restaurants and bars that shouldn%26#39;t be too crazy early in the week. I%26#39;d recommend Cashion%26#39;s (1819 Columbia Rd. NW) for a more upscale, American, dining venue, but they%26#39;re closed on Monday. You may want to keep it in mind for another night. If the weather%26#39;s nice - they have a few sidewalk tables.

A little closer to your hotel, just over the Duke Ellington bridge, is Mama Ayesha (1967 Calvert St. NW). It gets good reviews for middle eastern food and also has outdoor seating.

Have a good trip!

Keeping to the ';not straying to far'; theme I will second the ';Lebanese Taverna';, and also recommend the close by ';Sake Club'; for sushi.

If the weather is fair then go ahead and sit outdoors, but he interior of Sake Club deserves investigation. Have a pre-dinner cocktail at the one and eat at the other.

The Zoo is will probably be closed for evening by that time, it closes at dusk I believe.

For those other nights when you oriented and willing to stray further, adventure awaits in several directions.

I just got back from The Omni Shoreham and can%26#39;t wait to go back.

The Hotel is marvelous, ask to staff where to go what to do, they were right on the money with everything they recommended to us.

The Lebanese Restaurant was fabulous.

If it is late and you want to sit outside, there is a Diner right across the street from the hotel, that is neat and really a cafe setting.

Across the street diagonally, would be the Open City resturarant with outside tables and always seemed to have someone eating there. We had their breakfast, very good. Didn%26#39;t try for dinner. Very good prices. For faster service, there is also a Chipotes on the corner from their that we hit on our first night because we didn%26#39;t feel like searching for something new. The Woodley Cafe right near their is nothing to recommend. Overcooked salmon.
