Driving from NYC to Washington DC

Hi

We are thinking about driving from NYC to Washington DC in early January 07, the only real concern we have is the weather and road conditions as we don%26#39;t really experience similar weather in Australia. Any tips and also ideas of things to see along the way.

Thanks

Well the weather may or may not be good. If it is bad, just drive slow and be cautious of others while driving. 95 is always cleared and good enough to drive on with a few icy patches. Don%26#39;t drive too close behind the other cars at least 3-4 car lengths in the snow. Don%26#39;t press on the brakes immediately unless you have to. But I have never been on Interstate 95 when it%26#39;s snowing and it was too bad to drive in. Ice is probably the only thing you can%26#39;t do anything about while driving no matter what type of vehicle you have.

You could stop in Philadelphia (The city of Brotherly love) it%26#39;s directly off of Interstate 95. There are some museums to see there.

You could stop by in Baltimore, MD. The inner harbor is right off of the interstate as well. Nice shops, museums, and restaurants. The drive from NY to DC is only about 4 hours so you really don%26#39;t have to stop at all if you don%26#39;t want to. It%26#39;s pretty much a straight shot until you get to the Baltimore-DC area. Then it just depends on where you are staying in DC. (The streets getting to downtown DC from the interstate can be a little confusing for the locals so especially for an out-of-towner) the area where you will be staying could assist us in getting you directly there.

Of course, if you are renting a car, you could drop it in NYC area and take the train to Washington. It also stops in Philadelphia and Baltimore as well. The service is generally good and they have high speed trains (by our standards) which make the trip even easier. Also, if you are staying in DC itslf, parking usually runs about $ 30 a day at the hotels so this can add up fast.

Enjoy your trip!

I recommend the train too. There is a chance road conditions could be slick. The risk is higher for New York than DC, but you never know. The train is hassle-free and it brings you right into Washington%26#39;s Union Station. You can grab a quick bite to eat, then transfer to Metrorail (our subway) to get anywhere around the city. You%26#39;ll avoid very expensive parking charges and not get lost (which most people do given the city was organized to confuse).

Thanks for your advice everyone, looks like we will be investigating train travel.

Only issue with the train is the luggage. You could catch the train from NY to DC and then you would have to transfer all of your luggage onto the metro train of DC depending on the time of day, it%26#39;s busy and you don%26#39;t know where your going so it can be bothersome. Or you could just catch a cab (tons of them waiting) to your hotel.
