Dulles to Hilton Downtown

hi all,

Yet another post on getting from Dulles to the city. Booked jet blue flights a few months back , did%26#39;t realise at the time Dulles was a good bit out form DC. We are a family of four arriving on a Sunday towards the ned of this month, we arrive early enough, before 12. Being a weekend, what would be the best way to travel ? Take the 5a, or take the shuttle to the waterfall metro site is it? then get the metro in?

Or would it be quiet so a taxi might be speedy and not too expensive.

We are travelling back through dulles on the following wednesday then, flight leaving at 1130am. Would we have to leave the hotel by 8-830, middle of rush hour i guess, would ye suggest we leave earlier than that and go by metro and bus? taxi this time might be costly and could be held up in traffic i guess.

Any advice is much appreciated,

Podge

If it were just two of you I%26#39;d say stick with the Metro option. (That would be the ';West Falls Church'; Station you need).

It%26#39;s a $9 bus fare from the airport to the Metro at West Falls Church, then $1.85 for the Metro to Farragut West, with no transfer involved. (Assuming you%26#39;re staying at the Capital Hilton?)

But with 4 people, unless budget is a real issue, I%26#39;d be tempted to just hop in a taxi. The Dulles site shows $58 as estimated max fare to downtown. Throwing on a 15% tip would take it to $67 at most.

For 4 of you, it will cost about $44 to do the Metro and bus. So if the (estimated) $23 difference isn%26#39;t a budget buster, I%26#39;d just as soon hop in a taxi and get door to door with no waiting and no having to figure things out in an unfamiliar town. (Although the Metro is easy enough to use if you decide to go that route)

Dulles to Hilton Downtown

It%26#39;s the hilton on connecticut avenue so I think thats different from the capitol hilton. Any ideas on cost of taxi to there?

thanks for the reply

Got it - you%26#39;re at the ';Hilton Washington';, not the ';Capital Hilton';. In the scheme of things the taxi fare wouldn%26#39;t vary significantly between the two.

Your Metro trip would be slightly more painful as it would involve one transfer and then a slight uphill walk from Metro to hotel. :)

Given that there are four of you to share the cost and you%26#39;re travelling with suitcases and the uphill terrain to the Hilton isn%26#39;t going to be easy, I%26#39;d strongly recommend a taxi. It%26#39;ll cost between $15 and $20 per person - unlike Athens, Istanbul, and other cities, only registered taxis are permitted to pick up passengers at Dulles, so you know you aren%26#39;t going to get cheated by a dishonest driver.

Dr Wong, since it%26#39;s a family, they%26#39;re really not splitting the cost... that said, I%26#39;d still go with the taxi. It%26#39;s just so much easier, especially with luggage. Skimp on breakfast and lunch a couple days to make up the difference in cost for the convenience. And remember that many of the tourist attractions in DC are free so you%26#39;ll be saving there too. Enjoy your stay!
