where would someone from the dc area go for a day or two at the beach,is it reasonable to rent a car and take such a trip?
question for SueFee
Reheboth DE, and Ocean City MD are two popular sites among locals. You can rent a car and drive there (since there%26#39;s no public transportation readily available), but why would you want to visit local beaches when you%26#39;ve got the Jersey shore? :-)
question for SueFee
Also, Bethany Beach, DE is popular. If you do want to take a trip to a beach, it would be best to go during the week since lots of locals head for the MD and DE beaches on the weekends. Thus, lots of traffic back-ups on the Bay Bridge. If traffic moves well, it is about a 3-hour drive. One advantage to beaches around here -- the water temperature is warmer than it would be in New England, NY or NJ. So it%26#39;s up to you.
Thank you both for your insight. It is true we do have some beautiful beaches close to NYC-I just spent a couple of days in Montauk,it was incredible, but,my younger brother just moved to the woodley park area(great neighborhood).I try to get down to DC as much as I can to spend time with him and thought something a little different might be nice.I didn%26#39;t know it was such a long ride though, definately too long for a day trip-maybe a long weekend. Thanks again guys!
You%26#39;re welcome, NYCHRIS. Enjoy your stay!
There ARE beaches along the Chesapeake, however, that%26#39;ll cut a few hours off your drive. Sandy Point is a nice site near Annapolis, and Calvert Cliffs is a neat place to go beachcombing - there are lots of shark teeth dislodged from the cliffs during storms.
drwong-thank you for the info-this sounds pretty good,I will look into it-Annapolis is close,we just want something else to do besides seeing the usual monuments and museums.I%26#39;ll probably be asking a couple more questions in the weeks to come-thanks
Sandy Point was nice but I went a few years back and the water is NASTY. Also, just this past month, they put out a warning that Sandy Point Beach wasn%26#39;t safe to swim in. The park itself is nice. Just imagine swimming under the Brooklyn Bridge, well maybe not that bad but the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is right above swimming areas of the Bridge and it causes a lot of pollution. I remember (long, long, long, time ago, while swimming in the water- not knowing how it was, I saw slurpee cups, lolipops, and a rainbow of colors (oil %26amp; water mix) floating in the water. Also there were a lot jelly fish for some reason. I huried up and got out of that water.
Calvert Cliffs is nice. And you could just take Pennsylvania Avenue all the way to the ';end'; until you see signs saying Calvert Cliffs. It would be about 1.5 hour drive from DC
-Eastern Shore of Maryland has lots of little islands and areas where you could just get off and relax along the Chesapeake. Not as far as Ocean City.
