Beaches Close by the city?

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good beach close to the city , maybe chesapeake bay or nearby for kids ages 15 %26amp; 10. Thanks , Selane

Beaches Close by the city?

You may want to try Ocean City, MD. There%26#39;s a beach and a boardwalk, so lots to do for all ages. For something a bit nicer, try the Delaware beaches (Rehobeth, Bethany, Lewes). I%26#39;d say any of those would be a good 2.5-3 hour drive from DC, depending on traffic.

WTOP just did a report on beaches - check it out:

and the Washington Post just did a series of articles.....

The closest beach--which your children, given their ages, may find very boring--is on the Chesapeake Bay at North Beach, MD. It%26#39;s a very small beach, with a small boardwalk, in a rapidly gentrifying small town about 30 miles from DC. Its neighbor, Chesapeake Beach, has a small water park. (chesapeake-beach.md.us/majorattractions_wate鈥?/a>)

Both of these towns were places DC residents went for vacation before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was build in the %26#39;50s. After that, the towns went iinto a severe decline, which is being reversed now that housing prices in DC have escalated to the point where people are willing to put up with 30 mile commutes to work.

Sandy Point State Park, on the Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis (鈥tate.md.us/publiclands/鈥andypoint.html), is a larger beach but a longer drive, but it doesn%26#39;t require crossing the Bay bridge.

If you want an ocean beach, check the link provided by the previous poster.

Here%26#39;s another beach close to DC: the Breezy Point Beach and Campground in Calvert County, Maryland.

Calvert County - 30 miles + from downtown DC, has a few private cottages for rent. Visit the county%26#39;s tourist web site for information and ideas: http://www.ecalvert.com/tourism.htm

There are several bayfront family-run small cottage rental businesses and children can find plenty to do on our private beach or take a short trip to Solomons to visit the Marine Museum or north to Chesapeake Beach for the water park.

This time of year fishing is much better than swimming! Best time of the year to visit is May-June and Sept-Nov (swimming is jelly-fish free and warm - even May).

Closest would be the ones located in Calvert County.

Just straight down Pennsylvania Avenue (Rt.4) until the end (connecting Calvert County %26amp; St. Mary%26#39;s County). Also, just across the chesapeake bridge there are some smaller towns in the area of Cambridge, St. Michaels that are nice with smaller beaches but probably not for kids that age. Probably nothing for them to do.

Also with a 3 hour drive from DC to Ocean City, you could also go to VA Beach. Which in my opinion is a cleaner beach than OC, MD. OC probably would have more for the kids to do as far as activities. Also, the Deleware beaches are nice and clean and are about 2.5-3 hours away. Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, etc.

Also, Sandy Point State Park Beach, was just on a list of ';HAZARDOUS'; beaches/water which they recommended people to stay away from. The park itself is nice and clean but the beach (Fake Sand almost like Gritty gravel sand) and the water has always been nasty to me when I went there for the first time 10 years ago. There%26#39;s like this floating oil in the water (rainbow colors) from the cars that cross the Chesepeake Bay Bridge. Then there is always jellyfish everywhere. I got out of the water with a greasy itchy feeling all over my skin (YUK) It was pretty nasty. I vowed never to get in that water ever again.
