What is a good hotel near the sites most specifically smithsonian...maybe two or three blocks walking? Something in the 200-300 is acceptable.
Hotel near sites.
Holiday Inn Capitol or L%26#39;Enfant Plaza Hotel are probably the closest to the Smithsonian Museums, however, neither has really good dining or nightlife nearby. You may also want to look at the Hotel Monaco, the JW Marriott or the Hotel Washington (on the opposite side of the Mall). They%26#39;re still walking distance to the National Mall, although a few blocks further. Good luck.

-The Holiday Inn Capitol Hill is close. But there isn%26#39;t anything else in the area.
-Lowes L%26#39;Enfant isn%26#39;t too far. Just as the Holiday Inn it%26#39;s pretty much in a business district not much there as far as restaurants and shopping. L%26#39;Enfant Plaza has a few shops but nothing to go crazy over. You will have to walk up hill to get to the museums but it%26#39;s nearby. Also, this one isn%26#39;t all that great either.
JW Marriott on Pennsylvania Avenue is a little more than 2-3 blocks but it%26#39;s still walking distance to some of the museums.
Any reason why you want to stay that close to mall area?
Our metro system is very convenient, cheap, clean, and easily accessible for the disabled, kids, and seniors.
The L%26#39;Enfant Plaza hotel -- whose glory days have been a thing of the past -- is in a state of transition: it%26#39;s under new ownership which is doing renovations with an eye to re-';brand';ing it. But it ain%26#39;t there it. And as others have said, this area is largely ';dead'; at night; it%26#39;s slim pickings for dinner dining choices in the immediate environs.
With DC%26#39;s fine Metro system, I don%26#39;t think you need to feel confined to staying right by the Mall. Take a look at this handy pocket guide from the Transportation Authority which includes a list of attractions, etc. with the closest Metro stop:

Any particular reason you%26#39;ve (apparently) ruled out the Embassy Suites hotels you were considering earlier?
oops, that should be: ';it ain%26#39;t there yet.';
BTW, since there has been some confusion in the past: The Holiday Inn Capitol is the HI in southwest DC near the Air %26amp; Space Museum. The Holiday Inn on the Hill is north of the Mall, but only a short walk to the National Gallery of Art. Neither area is lively at night, but the HI on the Hill area has more dining options close by, such as the Capitol City Brewery, the Dubliner, and the Bistro Bis, plus the restaurants in Union Station, which is just a few blocks away.
