Mount Vernon questions

Does Mount Vernon ';sell out';? Meaning should I order tickets on-line before we head down there?

Also, is the Metro to Alexandria then taking the bus the best way to go or is this a big hassle?

I am planning to go on a Friday in early April (which I know is a busy time) and we will has Metro passes.

Any info would be appreciated.

Mount Vernon questions

I would imagine that doing metro to bus would be somewhat of a hassle to get to Mt. Vernon. However, if you are willing to spend the whole day at Mt. Vernon, it might be worth it. If you want to do something else that day, then I would recommend renting a car just for the day.

I don%26#39;t know whether or not tickets ever sell out.

Mount Vernon questions

We took the Spirit of Mt Vernon cruise and it was a wonderful way to get there.

Mount Vernon doesn%26#39;t ';sell out';. It%26#39;s a huge place with lots to see besides the mansion. I guess the advantage of buying tickets online would be to avoid the wait in line to buy tickets when you get there (which could be long given the time of year you%26#39;re visiting). However, I would probably wait because if the weather is terrible that day, you might want to change your plans.

Two caveats: 1) If you want to do the ';National Treasures'; tour, then you should try to get tickets online as they only allow a limited number on each tour. 2) Once you have a ticket and enter the grounds, you still have to wait in line to tour the mansion (i.e. there are no timed entry tickets). The last time I was there (an April day a few years ago), the line for the mansion tour was about 1 hour until mid-afternoon.

Catching the bus is a fiddly-affair. We caught a taxi from Alexandria (where we were staying) for about $20. Mt Vernon was one of our highlights .... it%26#39;s brilliant! Enjoy.

Had I known about the cruise suggested by an earlier poster, however, we would have definitely chosen it .. looks great! By the way, there is also a Frank Lloyd Wright house not far from Mt Vernon. Maybe a local could advise you about this if you were interested??

The Frank Lloyd Wright house is the Pope-Leahy house.

It is on the grounds of Woodlawn Plantation which is down the road from Mount Vernon across route 1.

This house used to be located in Falls Church, but when the Route 66 (the highway, not the route of lore) was built inside the Beltway, the path would have destroyed the house.

So the house was moved to the grounds of Woodlawn where it would be safe.

It is really a neat house. A good visit. A not-to-be-missed if you are at all interested in FLW.

We stayed in the downtown area in July. We took the metro then the bus to Mt. Vernon with our son (9). It was so easy. If you go to the metro website, you can figure out the times, etc. You should allot for an entire day at Mt. Vernon. We arrived at 10:30 and the National Treasure tickets were not available until later in the afternoon.
