greenbelt holiday inn

can anyone tell me if this is a good place to stay for 6 nights? And is it in a safe area?

greenbelt holiday inn

It%26#39;s in the middle of a parking lot in a shopping center, with a couple of restaurants in walking distance.

Honestly can%26#39;t think of a reason to stay there for 6 nights unless you had business nearby.

The immediate area is not unsafe.

Thanks Irish Fan-- Just need a reasonable place to stay while sightseeing in DC-- Didn%26#39;t want to spend too much

Greenbelt isn%26#39;t a bad area, but I%26#39;d look at something in downtown Bethesda (near the Metro) or Alexandria if you%26#39;d like to not rent a car. There aren%26#39;t really any hotels right near the Greenbelt Metro and if you%26#39;re not familiar with the area, I%26#39;d highly recommend that you take the Metro and NOT drive into DC--it%26#39;s not the easiest town to navigate by car.

Greenbelt is NOT a desirable area. You%26#39;d have to ride the subway through Prince George%26#39;s County, which I would recommend to nobody.

Try Northern Virginia hotels. Much easier, and safer, access to DC.

Please don%26#39;t listen to the northern VA fearmongers. Riding a train through PG county is no different than riding a train through Montgomery county or Fairfax county. You%26#39;re on a train, and there%26#39;s nothing unsafe about it.

The only reason to be concerned is if you%26#39;re somehow alarmed by seeing non-white people, in which case, DC is probably not the best city to visit in general.

That said, Greenbelt isn%26#39;t exactly the greatest spot for access to tourist sites, though its no worse than staying in Fairfax County. But, assuming you have reliable transportation to and from the metro station, and you don%26#39;t mind staying in the city all day once you head there, then you shouldn%26#39;t have much problem seeing everything you want.

I%26#39;d advise checking hotels on Hotwire or Priceline for hotel prices, and you may find some similar rates closer to the center of the city.

What exactly is the problem with certain people and PG County. Taking the metro from Greenbelt into DC is fine you will be safe. It%26#39;s no different than riding through DC. And I actually think that the metro system INCLUDING PG County is much safer than many other major cities like NYC, London and even Atlanta. So let%26#39;s not make people think they are staying in a horrible, crime driven area.

TO DevDC, I just read about 3 posts from you today and recently that you have been bashing PG County, what is it with you? I%26#39;m not saying there aren%26#39;t bad areas there but let%26#39;s be fare. There are some places in Arlington and Alexandria and Montgomery County that I would never step foot in but you aren%26#39;t talking about those areas. PG has some nice communities. Yeah Greenbelt isn%26#39;t exactly the best location for tourist staying 6 nights for visiting DC and there aren%26#39;t many places to go nearby without a car but don%26#39;t make it seem like an entire county is bad based on your personal issues or mishappenings.

If you search for Dev%26#39;s old posts (check for slightly different variations of his posting name over time) you%26#39;ll find numerous postings with the same theme, which is that because Prince George%26#39;s County is a majority minority county, nobody white (or maybe anybody) should stay there. There are bad parts of the county with relatively high crime rates, but there also are many stable, solid neighborhoods -- including Greenbelt. I%26#39;m old, white, and female and have been riding the Green Line since it opened, and I have never had a problem. Do I glance behind me to make sure I%26#39;m not being followed when strolling away from a station? Yes--but I do that at any station that%26#39;s not busy. Frankly, I%26#39;m getting tired of the racist rants.

That said, the hotels in Greenbelt are not within walking distance of the Metrorail station, so I definitely do not recommend them to anyone without a car. Bus service isn%26#39;t particularly good on weekends or during non-rush times M-F. If you let people here know what your budget is and when you will be here, they may be able to recommend alternatives that are close to Metrorail.

I feel I can speak about PG County because that is where I first lived when I moved to the area.

PG used to be so nice, then very quickly in the 70s it became the most violent and dangerous county in the metropolitan area (not including DC).

Sure, the area has picked up a little bit, but it is still not an area I%26#39;d recommend to anyone.

It is still a cesspit, in my opinion. And is giving our opinions not part of the expectations of this venue.

I%26#39;m sorry if my opinions offend some of you, but I%26#39;d rather give a tourist a true impression than keep some of you PC militants happy.

You would have to be out of your mind to say that the green line is safer than the Orange line into Fairfax. That is not fearmongering or being racist. It is the truth. There is simply more crime in PG county than any other. Fairfax is not crime free, but the chances of it are lower, and that has nothing to do with anyone%26#39;s skin color. If that were the case, you would see just as much crime in Fairfax.

';A report to be released this week finds that serious crimes, ranging from robbery to assault, increased more than 15 percent from last year to 1,821 -- an average of about five per day. Robberies increased by nearly a third and larceny was up 17 percent.

Still, Metro officials note the transit system is still relatively safe. In 2008, the system averaged 2.52 crimes per 1 million riders.';

2.52 crimes/1 million riders - ooooh scary
