1. Is it necessary to buy tickets ahead of time--do you skip a long line of people waiting to buy tickets?

2. www.hopstop.com is a great source for walking directions. You will probably need the addresses but you can try just putting the name of the places in.

No advanced tickets needed,we walk up and got them,it is about a fifteen min walk from there we went to it after our White House tour,walk south on 15th St then left on Pennsylvania Ave.As for the taxi fare it cost us $25 for four people(they charge 1.50 after the first person and $1 for every bag we had 2 large bags)our trip was 6.5 miles,your will be shorter.
