New York to Washington DC

Hi there,

For some reason flights from SA are cheaper to New York than to Washington DC by $500.

Is there an under $500 way of getting from New York JFK to Washington DC?

Thanks.

Have you checked flights? I expect they are cheaper than $500. Taking the subway from JFK to Penn Station and then the train to DC is cheaper, but will take 6 hours or more.

Booking it as 2 separate tickets may be the way to go. You can often get plane tickets between NY and DC for under $200 round trip.

you can get flights from NYC to DCA for $125-150....you%26#39;ll be in DC in less than an hour....

Wow! Thats brilliant - considering the rand dollar exchange, that really is a huge saving for me.

Thanks a lot.

What website should I look at....I am aware of kayak.com, is there others?

I usually use Kayak. But it%26#39;s worth noting that the TripAdvisor flight finder, now in beta, got a nice shout-out in the media (I think the NY Times) last week for incorporating the potential additional fees you%26#39;re likely to face airline-by-airline in the pricing calculation to get the ';real'; pricing based on your specific needs (e.g. # of pieces of luggage). That%26#39;s something Kayak doesn%26#39;t cover.

You should see a link towards the upper left side of this page reading ';Flights to Washington DC,'; or use this URL:

Hiya Jo Jo,

If expenses are a factor, you might want to try one of the new Coach Services between DC and Washing. There are all sorts of new companies offering coach service between both cities. You can get a round trip ticket for less than $50 if you book in advance.

Do a google for Bolt Bus and Mega Bus. They are the two biggest services now.

Sure, it is a 4 hour bus ride, but if money is an issue it might be a good alternative.

Cheers,

Dev

You can also save some $$ if you fly between Newark (EWR) and Baltimore (BWI).

It%26#39;s not suprising that flights are much cheaper to NY - that%26#39;s true for pretty much anywhere. In terms of getting to DC, I would say this. If you can find a flight out of the SAME airport that you fly into, it will be worth your money to pay extra to fly down to DC. However, if you have to switch airports for any reason, you may be much better off taking the bus between the two in terms of cost and time will be about the same. I%26#39;d rank the bus companies as such:

Bolt

Tripper - goes to Bethesda, not DC

DC2NY

Megabus

Vamoose - goes to Bethesda and Arlington, not DC

Any other bus line

Wow so many options....

Since I am visiting family....maybe it will be simpler for them to book the internal transport for me.

That way I will end up in DC instead of Washington state!

Thanks guys for all the great tips!
