subway under the Capitol

Has anyone ever ridden the Capitol subway? (not to be confused with the Metro) I understand that ';civilians'; are permitted to use it. Is this true?

Hi! The United States Capitol Subway System that you are referring to consists of three underground electric light rail systems that connect the U.S. Capitol building to the House and Senate office buildings: two on the Senate side on the north side of the Capitol, and one on the House side on the south side of the Capitol.

The last I heard, the systems are open to public. But you must be escorted by a Senate or House staffer with proper identification. This can be during a tour of the Capitol complex.

However, during votes, the House subway is restricted for Congresswomen, Congressmen, and Senators.

If you can%26#39;t get onto the Subway, the Subway tunnels have pedestrian pathways that are very well lit and large.

I hope this helps!

Mcvin%26#39;s response was spot-on. Just arrange for a tour of the Capitol through your Senator%26#39;s or Representative%26#39;s office and ask the staffer leading the tour to take you on the subway. (We did it last summer.)

thansk so much to both of you for the info.

I rode it for a long time when I worked on the Hill. It is OK as a novelty but don%26#39;t expect a Disney like experience!

We are stopping at the Russell building for gallery passes so I thought my son might get a kick out of it riding it to the Capitol (is the distance even fifty yards?)
