I will be staying in Laurel, MD April 3 - 5, 2009. I am planning to use the Greenbelt Metro Station Saturday morning for my trip into DC for the Parade. Does anyone see any problem with this? Is Dc generally crowded for the parade? Is the metro system safe from that area? Will I need a smartcard to park my vehicle? I will be traveling solo and will return before dusk the same day. Any replies will be appreciated.
Greenbelt Metro for Cherry Blossom Parade...Since it%26#39;s a weekend, you should be fine. DC is crowded, but nothing too overwhelming. The metro should be fine and you car will be fine in that lot. As far as I know, parking is still free on weekends, so you don%26#39;t need a Smartrip for this.
Greenbelt Metro for Cherry Blossom Parade...Thanks for your reply. I love to visit DC, and have been often, but never on my own before. I don%26#39;t mind it being ';crowded';. I expect there to be lots of folks there for the same reason I will be. I was just wondering if there is a large turnout for the parade on Saturday.
Also, I%26#39;ve never ridden the Metro from/to an outlying station before, so was curious about that, too. Especially since I will be traveling solo.
Good to know about the parking being free...I was ready to spend $30.00 for the smart card. I may still do that, since I assume it can be used anytime I may be in Dc.
If you have any other tips or words of advise...please let me know.
Parking is free on weekends and federal holidays at the Metro Stations. Greenbelt station is a nice station and you should be just fine parking and walking there. I would not venture walking from the station area, not that I expect you to be doing so! We used this station while staying in the area (camping-Cherry Hill) 2 years ago. There was always lots of people around, even during the night time hours (late evening). Have fun!!
Don%26#39;t worry about buying the SmarTrip Card.
You have to pay $5.00 for the card and automatically put $5.00 on the card ($10.00).
You can just purchase one farecard and put a certain amount of money on it and use it each time you go in and out of the train station.
Now if you do use the metro during the week (M-F) then you will need to use the SmarTrip card to exit the stations with no other means of exiting. Except at a few stations that are on a pilot program (New Carrollton is one which isn%26#39;t far from Greenbelt).
There will be a lot of people but not unbearable. And yes the station and system is safe you will be fine.
I appreciate the replies. Thanks, I feel better now. Looking forward to my visit, and no I won%26#39;t be walking anywhere away from the station.
I%26#39;ve also learned about the Japanese Festival on Saturday. Looking forward to that also.
