Hi! My family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids) has decided to do a trip to Washingto DC in 3 weeks during our Spring Break, which also happens to be during the Cherry Blossom Festival. We will arrive on a Tuesday and check out on a Saturday. We have never been to DC and thus don%26#39;t have any idea of where to stay. I have been reading about the different locations, but my big question is if it is reasonable to stay a little further out (in order to find an affordable hotel) and take the metrorail in? Or will that waste a lot of time in traveling to the the typical tourist spots from our hotel? I found a deal at the Omni Shoreham Hotel which is located in Rock Creek Park. The reviews on TripAdvisor say that it is right next to a metrorail stop, so should I assume that this makes is quick and easy for us to go sightseeing each day?
Also, is this a good hotel to stay at? Any others that are a good location and that I can find a reasonable price at? It seems that the Tuesday and Wednesday night stays are the higher priced nights, and the prices drop for Thursday and Friday.
Any advice would be much apprieciated!

I am about to go to DC in 3 weeks and will be staying at the Virginian Suites, near the Rosslyn metro station in Arlington. Reviews here seem to be acceptable, and with a family you have the benefit of a kitchen (and free parking if you are driving). I will post a review after our stay.

The Omni is in a great location--a short Metro ride to the sites, and walkable to the zoo and much of Dupont Circle. You should read the reviews on here if you have not already. I have always had good experiences there.
There have been several recent discussion on this forum about the Omni Shoreham. A quick search should bring them up. But you need to realize that the Shoreham is not quite in the center of the city, but is only one stop away from Dupont Circle and still very much in the city. Only about 4 blocks to the National Zoo, which is even further away from downtown. The Metro train trip is 10-15 minutes to almost any of the usual tourist spots. Rock Creek Park cuts right through a big swathe of the city, from Georgetown to Maryland and out into Maryland.
If you let me know your exact dates and what rate you found at the Omni, I can do a quick search and see if I see anything better. However, if you think you found a good deal at the Omni, it%26#39;s definitely a good choice, especially during Cherry Blossom. Good deals are hard to come by during that time.
Thanks Mopsydog!! That is so nice of you to check for us. We will be arriving 4/7 and chack out 4/11. Our kids are both 9 years old.
Thanks!!
Oops, I forgot to list the rate I found. It seems that they offer a spring package; here are the details for a deluxe 2 queen beds room:
Spring Forward Promotion 04/07/2009 2 nights $209.00 USD
Spring Forward Promotion 04/09/2009 1 night $0.00 USD
Spring Forward Promotion 04/10/2009 1 night $209.00 USD
Subtotal (4 nights):
Taxes:
Total for Room:
$627.00 USD
$90.93 USD
$717.93 USD
Travelzoo is offering a good deal also of $109/night, but it is only for 4/9 and on. I have AAA, but piecing together a stay there with AAA for 4/7-4/9 and travelzoo for 4/9-4/11 is still more than the Spring promotion offered by the hotel itself.
Great deal. I wouldn%26#39;t pass that up. I did a quick search and the only hotel I could find that was even close is the Courtyard by Marriott NW. It%26#39;s a good location, near Dupont Circle, but I actually think the Omni is better because it%26#39;s a bit closer to metro and you can also walk to the zoo from the Omni. (The zoo is free and should be lots of fun for your 9 year olds). Check out Marriott%26#39;s website or call them to find out the exact rates (I found $149/night with AAA - plus taxes that comes to about $683 for 4 nights if my calculations are correct).
Thanks for the help! I called the Omni directly, and they offered me a great deal. I was able to get the first 3 nights under the spring promotion rate of $209 for the first 2 nights and the 3rd night free. Then they booked a separate reservation for my 4th night at the AAA rate of $136/night, which was much cheaper than the AAA rate online.(He linked my reservations together so that we don%26#39;t switch rooms.) So, my total for 4 nights is only $554 (before tax).
I also found that a friend%26#39;s daughter lives in DC, so I called her and she highly recommended the Omni Shoreham and said that we would love the area (which, coincidentally, is where she lives!). So, I think we have found a good deal. Many thanks to everyone for your advice and help!!
This is a great deal. Don%26#39;t forget to post your review of the hotel after you vacation!
