We will be spending one week in DC and already have a White House tour lined up. Does anyone have any suggestions on what other attractions we should see? My son is interested in politics and history which makes DC a great place to visit, if overwhelming.
Thanks for your help.
Suggestions for trip with an 11 year oldyou should look at the things to do list on the left and get a guidebook.
Suggestions for trip with an 11 year oldLots of things:
-Capitol Building
-Library Of Congress
-American History Museum
-All of the Monuments/Memorials, specifically the Lincoln, FDR.
-Holocaust Museum (An 11-year old should be old enough to view most of the exhibits and especially an 11-year old who ';likes'; politics I would believe his mind is in another age group/generation).
-Newseum (only one out of the above that isn%26#39;t free)
-National Archives
-Ford%26#39;s Theater
Thanks for the helpful suggestions MrsMaryland. It%26#39;s much appreciated
Just got from DC with an 11 yr old along with her 14 yr old sister...
Their favorites...
DC by Foot
Monuments by Moonlight
(both of these in the rain also!)
Musuem of Crime and Punishment
Georgetown (shopping and cute restaurants)
Arlington National Cemetary (Change of the Guard and wreath laying cemetary)
Museum of Americna History
Jewelry display at Natural History
We ran out of time to go the Newseum
I think the Holocaust museum is really not suited for my kids (they know what%26#39;s happened) but seeing all the images is very upsetting to them. That is a a case-by-case call probably.
Yes, Holocaust museum is not something for children. Mature teens, possibly.
I also warn people that the new Marine Corps Museum at Quantico is very graphic.
Know your children, and use your best judgement.
Mount Vernon should be of interest to your son if he is interested in history and politics. It was the favorite D.C. attraction of my sons two years ago and we are going back in June.
Flash407, which tour company did you use for Monuments by Moonlight? Was it the walking tour or a riding tour? I enjoyed reading your ';DC Live'; thread. We are going in June. My DD will be 11 then %26amp; DS is 7.
Thanks!
Our moonlight tour was by old town trolley and it was a motorcar tour. DC by Foot was the walking tour we enjoyed.
One piece of advice if you do the night tour. We caught the tour at union station and that would be a great place to get a bite to eat before the tour. We also returned after 10PM following the tour (really, not was closer to 11!)
