Bureau of Engraving %26amp; Printing
Ford%26#39;s Theatre and the House where Lincoln died
International Spy Museum
National Air %26amp; Space Museum
Natural History Museum (and the IMAX)
Holocaust Memorial Museum
Museum of American History
National Postal Museum
Zoological Park
All the major memorials (Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington, etc)
Mount Vernon
bets way to see these sitesAnne,
That is a tall task without knowing how many days you have, how much time you%26#39;d like to spend at each, etc.
I would take a look at this map to see where stuff is:
http://map.mapnetwork.com/destination/dc/
Generally, you can break your destinations down into a couple sets:
South side of the Mall: BEP, Holocaust Museum, Jefferson Memorial
Chinatown/Metro Center: Spy Museum, Ford%26#39;s Theater
Main Mall: Air %26amp; Space, Natural History, American History, the major monuments + Postal Museum (union Station--walking distance from the east end of the Mall)
Other: Mount Vernon, Zoo (not near each other, or any of the other destinations)
Depending on how much time you want to spend at each, I would knit your itinerary together with those ';clusters'; in mind.
bets way to see these sitesMount Vernon is impossible to do with the Metro.
Of the major memorials and monuments, you would probably want to use Smithsonian station on the Blue/Orange lines. Only the Washington Monument, however, is very close. The others are a bit of a haul on foot.
All other attractions listed are within about three blocks of a Metro stop.
BEP: Smithsonian (Blue/Orange lines)
Ford%26#39;s Theatre: Metro Center or Gallery Place (all lines)
Spy Museum: Gallery Place (Red/Yellow/Green)
Air %26amp; Space: L%26#39;Enfant Plaza (all but Red)
Natural History: Smithsonian
Holocaust Museum: Smithsonian
American History: Federal Triangle (Blue/Orange)
Postal Museum: Union Station (Red)
Zoo: Woodley Park or Cleveland Park (Red)
how many days we have will depend on finding a cheap but nice hotel with a pool! Thanks for your input!
is Mount Vernon worth a stop on the way home? Thanks for the map too!
It%26#39;s a great destination (check out reviews on Things To Do on the left). But it is south of the city (not directly on the way to CT) and can take a while to visit (at least half a day), so you might be short-changing it on the way out of the city. But better a brief visit than no visit at all!
Hi Anne -
One great way to see the memorials is to take a bike tour. bikethesites.com are located right near the mall and they have a couple different tours that will take you by all the major memorials on the Mall.
Since the Natural History , Air %26amp; Space and American History Museums are all adjacent to the mall, it would also help you familarize yourself with all of their locations.
You could also just rent a bike and go off on your own. They are located at the Federal Triangle metro.
Hope you enjoy your trip to DC!
-Jane
