Best recommended tours?

Hi. Can anyone recommend which tour companies you like best? My family of 4 consists of me, my husband, and our twin 9 yr olds. We love history and are very excited to visit. None of us have been to DC before, and there are so many tours and tour companies to choose from. How do I pick? Ideally, we would love a tour that has a tour guide who takes you to different places and then comes into the places with you telling you all sorts of things that you wouldn%26#39;t otherwise know.

My husband and I did a few tours like that in London years ago (Gray Line tour), and they were amazing. Now I have children, though, so I have to figure out how to choose something that they can keep up with (some of those tours seem like full day tours). I don%26#39;t think we will take the children to any of the cemetaries, as they seem a little young for that. Also not taking them to the Holocaust Museum for the same reason.

Any suggestions of your favorite tours would be great! It seems the nighttime tours are popular, but I wonder if kids are too cranky by then?

Thanks!

Not sure if anyone will accompany you in, but a friend of mine took her mom on the Tourmobile and said it was great. She learned things about DC she didn%26#39;t know and had lived here for 10 years.

Hi.

I highly recommend the Old Towne Trolley - Adults $35

Children - $18 for TWO days. They stop at many places that people want to see. You may get off at any stop and hop back on another when you are ready to continue the tour. They come by every 30 minutes or less! They even pick up in the morning at many hotels. This company has LIVE guides talking to you, not the recorded versions the other companies have.

Hope this helps.

We loved Monuments by Moonlight (Old Towne Trolley) and DC by Foot (dcbyfoot.com)

See my ';Live from DC'; for more info with kid stuff.

We did the DC by Foot tour on Saturday with my two boys (12 %26amp; 13 years old) and loved it. The guide was very entertaining and informative. We had already been to all of the Memorials and Monuments that he took us to, but he gave us so much more information and history that we never knew. I would recommend this to anyone. It%26#39;s free -- he just works for tips. We gave him a nice tip. We learned a lot more from him than we did on the Monuments by Moonlight tour, but I would do both -- the Monuments look really special after dark, and there are very few activities for children in DC after dark.
