FYI - just back from DC for a one-night visit (like to try to go at least once a year). Was able to get a tour for Saturday morning%26#39;s White House tour through our Congressman. If you are able to get the tour, bring your ';paperwork'; with you. The group in front of us, my group (of 7) and a couple of other groups while we were there ';were not on the list.'; Not too big of a deal, but they do ask for your ';paperwork'; which was my letter from my Congressman giving the ID number and directions of what to send. Luckily, I also brought along a copy of what I had to send in (names, d.o.b.%26#39;s, ss #%26#39;s, etc) and that made it easier for them to go inside and check. Took about 20 minutes for them to ';clear us.'; Tour was great - amazing that the rooms we pass by are used all the time for events.
Stayed at Homewood Suites in Herndon - yes, it%26#39;s out of the way but for under $100 w/tax you can%26#39;t beat what you get (hot breakfast, pool, hot tub, very very clean......) so it works for us.
Just wanted to pass on the tip about bringing ';paperwork'; if you get a tour of the white house. The tour is definitely something to be done at least once in your lifetime - especially bring your children to show them history itself.

white house tourkcp5: thank you! we are doing the tour next friday and I%26#39;m not sure I would have thought to bring the letter, etc.
By the way, did you get stuck in the rain storms? what was the weather like (ie what should I pack? too hot still for fall clothes out there? we%26#39;re in the pacific northwest and it%26#39;s actually becoming fall here)
white house tourWeather was hot, but not bad (we live in Jersey so similar). No rain at all. We were in shorts the entire weekend, including at night when we went out to see a few monuments on our own ';by moonlight.';
Also fyi - we parked on Pennsylvania Ave in a garage that I believe was between 13th %26amp; 14th streets for only $8 for the day on a Saturday. It was kind of in the middle of the block, we drove down under the building, very close and convenient to the White House and to the White House Visitor Center. This was less than most of the $15 per day garages we saw. I believe it was in the Ronald Regan building. At the Visitor center they have a gift shop where they have very pretty prints of the White House for only $1 (about 11'; x 14';) and they sell the White House Christmas tree ornaments that I guess come out yearly. They also had a food court in the building we parked at that had a good variety and we ended up having lunch at.

I am planning a trip to DC in October, about one month away. I have written my dear Senator about including me with a tour group. I am a single individual--do you or anyone else know if it%26#39;s possible for a ';group'; of one person to take this tour? Or can I tag along with someone else?
I also want to join a tour of the Pentagon, and have asked my Senator about that too.
Does anyone know if any other tours require a pre-authorization from a Congressman?
Thanks for the reminder about the ';paperwork';--hopefully I%26#39;ll have some positive news to take with me.
GoN2DC:
I don%26#39;t believe the Pentagon offers tours. Your congressman can also set you up with a tour of Congress. He or she can set up other tours for you, like Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Library of Congress, etc., but at less busy times of year it%26#39;s not required to book those in advance or thru your congressman. But hey, if your congressman wants to set you up with them and they work into your schedule, all the better!
I%26#39;m planning a trip to D.C. in October also. There are 2 of us in our group. Does anyone offer individuals the opportunity to join a group for a White House tour?
Maf14:
You%26#39;ll need to contact your Congressman or Senator to get a tickets for the WH tour. I don%26#39;t believe it matters how many are in your party.
How long did your White House tour last? We just learned our White House tour is for 11am, and our Congressional Aid VIP tour of the Capitol is scheduled for the same day at 2pm.
Want to make sure we can do both and not have to worry.
celebrationkim - you shouldn%26#39;t have a problem doing the White House Tour and then the capital tour. The WH tour will probably last 30 to 45 minutes at most.
