Blues Clubs

We%26#39;ll be in DC from Friday Sept. 29 to Wed Oct. 4th. Can anyone recommend a good blues club? We especially love the mississippi blues.

Blues Clubs

I don%26#39;t know if they have Mississippi Blues but U-Topia, 1418 U St., NW (between 14th and 15th Sts.) has live blues and jazz. The place is described as ';funky and informal'; with ';eclectic eats'; and ';free live music nightly';.

Blues Clubs

Check the schedule for Blues Alley in Georgetown. It%26#39;s the only real blues club I know of in DC and it plays jazz a lot of the time. Dark, old-time feel where it%26#39;s all about the music. No talking during performances. Often a drink minimum in addition to the ticket charge and mandatory contribution to their ';education program.'; Eat elsewhere before the show--almost anyplace in Georgetown has better food.

If you just want to hear a little music before heading to dinner, though in a very different setting, random acts appear at the Kennedy Center%26#39;s Millenium Stage (free performances every evening at 6), so you might check their schedule also to see if anything interesting is coming up.

Live blues music makes a frequent appearance at Madam%26#39;s Organ in the Adams Morgan neighborhood -- and when you click onto a particular date of the month on their Calendar page, you get a pop-up blurb which gives you a decent idea of the performer(s) for the night, if you%26#39;ve not already heard of them.

I think you might really enjoy Robert Lighthouse (a transplanted Swede! who plays largely Delta blues) who may be appearing at Chef Ike%26#39;s Mambo House -- also in Adams Morgan -- while you%26#39;re here. His web site is a bit out-of-date re: performance dates, and Chef Ike has not yet posted their schedules for those dates, but you could check back later on their web sites or give Chef Ike a call once you%26#39;re in town:

FYI, both of these places are ';roadhouse'; in atmosphere. but attract eclectic crowds so you won%26#39;t feel out of place. and both consistently appear on DC best bar lists like this this one:

I recommend, however, that you have dinner elsewhere :-)

Bohemian Caverns is another great option (at the corner of ';U'; street and 11th I think). It is a DC Jazz/Blues institution, many top artists have played and recorded albums there.

You can have dinner upstairs and then go downstairs into the caverns for the performance. They also serve food and drinks downstairs but I wouldn%26#39;t recommend having a meal down there.
