tea?

Okay, I hear these things about afternoon tea service in DC and see samantha brown on the travel channel munching on little tea cakes... what%26#39;s the story? Is it a fun experience and does anyone recommend a place to go?

thanks all- love this site

Here are two possibilities for a formal afternoon tea:

The Jefferson Hotel (202) 833-6206--Daily from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., $28/per person. Scones baked while you wait plus different tea sandwiches

The Washington National Cathedral (202) 537-8993--You start with a tour of the Cathedral, then have tea with sandwiches or scones. This is only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The tour starts at 1:30 p.m. followed by tea at 3 p.m. $22/person. Reservations are a must--you can reserve up to 6 months in advance.

The Four Seasons does tea as does the Ritz. Coincidentally, if you go to the website for the Ritz-Washington, DC (not Georgetown), and click on dining, then lobby lounge, you can see a picture of their tea set up.

I did it once for a bridal shower (at the Ritz in Philly). It is a fun experience. Not something you%26#39;d do everyday - unless your a ';lady who lunches'; type I guess :-) Makes you feel kind of fancy.

I%26#39;d recommend either the Four Seasons or the Ritz - I%26#39;ve been to both and they are equally as nice. I was at the Ritz Pentagon City location - a friend of mine was at the downtown location a few years back and Hillary and Chelsea were tea-ing there, so you might get to see someone famous! I liked the Pentagon City location because it was attached to the mall and I love to shop as well. Although I found the Four Seasons more tranquil. Either way, you can%26#39;t go wrong. Do the Royal Tea if you really want to relax - includes a glass of champagne or a champagne cocktail - really nice...have fun!

We%26#39;ve seen celebrities (by DC standards, anyways) at the Mayflower Hotel%26#39;s afternoon teas. It%26#39;s across the street from ABC%26#39;s Washington studio, and a few blocks from the White House, making it convenient for both political and media types.

Tea is so much fun and you don%26#39;t have to drink tea, they usually offer coffee.

My fave is the Willard Intercontinental. They have afternoon tea every day from 2-5. I love the hotel, the area and the menu. Plus, they serve my favorite brand of tea on the planet (Mighty Leaf Tea).
