Quick trip to Wash DC and best hotel deal for family

We aer traveling mid-October and I have been looking for hotels...there are so many! Any chance to get something good for $100 or less? Or if above $100, kids 12 and under eat free? We have 3 boys that eat alot!

thanks! Lisa

After looking at Expedia, it%26#39;s highly unlikely that you will find anything decent for $100 during mid-October. The closest one was Capitol Hill Suites for an average rate of $198/night. Otherwise, look into Embassy Suites--there are 3 locations in DC and one in the Crystal City section of Arlington, VA. Embassy Suites offers full free breakfasts for their guests.

Residence Inns also offer a free breakfast buffet -- not as big a spread as that offered by Embassy Suites, but it includes hot dishes (eggs, oatmeal, made-to-order waffles) as well as cold cereals, etc. The problem I%26#39;m seeing insofar as you%26#39;re concerned -- re: both the local RI%26#39;s and DC ES%26#39;s within decent proximity to a Metro station -- is not only the nightly rate during mid-October weekends, but also availability of rooms which will accommodate your famly of 5.

The Holiday Inn on Capitol Hill presently has rooms with 2 queen beds (with the possibility of a rollaway bed) for $160/night -- and kids eat free there :-) So, if you don%26#39;t mind all of you being in 1 room, that would be a good bet. The immediate environs offer few evening dining choices because it%26#39;s an office neighborhood, but if you%26#39;ll be taking advantage of the HI%26#39;s dining room, that won%26#39;t matter much

For $149/night in mid-October, the highly regarded Hilton Garden Inn in Arlington seems to have a large room with 2 queens + 1 double bed, but I would call them before booking to make sure that the room does indeed have those 3 beds; the website description isn%26#39;t as clear as it might be:

There is a La Quinta hotel in Oxon Hill, MD which is about 10 mintues from the DC/MD line.

The rates should be alot better than staying downtown.

Across the street from this hotel is a park and ride bus that will take you straight into downtown.

Me and my son%26#39;s used this mode of transportation this past March when we went to visit my mom who lives in Fort Washington, MD

Note: the price of food drops significantly if you venture 2-3 blocks away from the smithsonion area. The McD%26#39;d in the air %26amp; space museum prices were starting at $7 for a value meal which I just could not bring myself to pay (although, i could afford to pay). I asked the cashier where a ';regular McD%26#39;s'; was and it was just 2 blocks away. There is at least 3-4 regular Mc.D%26#39;s all within walking distance. This also applys to the hot dog vendors and other eateries. I just used McD%26#39;s as an example.

Won%26#39;t find anything in that price range in DC at all. Unless it%26#39;s a motel in a bad area of DC.

-You could go into parts of Arlington or Alexandria, just as long as it%26#39;s on the metro line so you have easy access to downtown.

-Most restaurants (chain) in the immediate DC area usually always have free meals for kids under 12.

Some areas outside of DC that might be reasonably priced and near a metro station:

-Look up Alexandria

-Arlington (Not cyrstal city or near airport they will be expensive)

-Bethesda

-Greenbelt, MD (A litte out there but it%26#39;s near Univ. of MD College Park and they have lots of places to eat and shopping in this area. Metro Accessible. Greenbelt Marriott, Residence Inn Greenbelt, Hampton Inn Greenbelt, Courtyard Marriott Greenbelt,

-

It depends how flexible you are with the area. My husband and I always stay in either Gaithersburg, MD or Rockville, MD. You can find a hotel under $100 pretty much all year long and you have several metro stops within a few miles (as well as a ton of great restaurants). I would recommend something like a Springhill Suites or Residence Inn as both offer free breakfast (they actually both are at the Rio at Washingtonian Complex- one of my favorite places to go when I%26#39;m back in town).

If you want to be really close to DC, there are some hotels in Rosslyn that are right across the river. I%26#39;d again look for one that at least offers free breakfast to save on meals. Good luck and safe travels!
