I am taking my husband to DC - primarily for a Redskins game on Oct 15th.
That Saturday, Oct 16th we would like to see a few sites around the national mall.
I haven%26#39;t been to DC since my high school trip and since that was all coordinated behind the scenes, I don%26#39;t know what requires tickets and/or reservations.
What sites are free admission where you can walk and sight see vs. which sites require tickets are are not recommended for a potentially busy Saturday?
What are the must-see sites?
I remember the monuments, the FBI building, Arlington National Cemetary....
Thanks again!!
one day sight-seeing
I%26#39;d recommend the Tourmobile... it runs from around 9am to 4:30p and takes you to all the major monuments and museums.
one day sight-seeing
The FBI tour will be closed, but all the Smithsonian museums will be open and are free. For a list and their hours, go to www.si.edu.
You can see what sites require tickets by typing that term into the Search bar above and see what pops up.
I would agree and take one of the tourmobile. Then I would choose one of the Smithsonian museums to see. Remember the History museum is undergoing renovation. You don%26#39;t need tickets for the places around the mall except for the B of engraving and printing. I would definatly walk the memorial. Start at the Washington monument and walk to the beautiful World War II memorial. Of all this was my favorite(tied with the FDR memorial) It is just beautiful and very peaceful. Then walk the path to the Lincoln memorial, the Vietnam and Korean memorials. If you can%26#39;t walk it (and trust me it is a very long walk) the tourmobile takes you from place to place. If you have time my nephew and I enjoyed the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court. We went over the Fourth of July last year and it was very busy but the only lines were the security checks and it didn%26#39;t take that long. Enjoy the trip and the game.
I would say the most beautiful way to enjoy Lincoln Memorial is to see it at night preferably with full moon%26#39;s reflection in the river.
White House and Capitol tours require tickets. WH tours can only be obtained thru your Senator or Congressman and it%26#39;s probably too late, although you can try... You can also get congressional tours thru your Congressman or Senator or wait in line on Saturday morning. It will likely be crowded and not worth the wait for your short visit.
The Smithsonians and most of the monuments/memorials won%26#39;t be a problem - all will be open and free (except American History - just to clarify what another poster mentioned). If you want to go to the Holocaust Museum or the Washington Monument, I%26#39;d recommend getting tickets in advance. If you want to skip the Wash Monument but still get a free, birds-eye view of the city, go to the Old Post Office Pavilion Bell Tower. The Supreme Court is closed on Saturdays and as DrWong said, FBI is closed at all times.
Go %26#39;skins!
