My wife and I will be in DC in early November and we are looking for a good breakfast place. If anyone on the forum is familiar with NYC, there is a place on the Upper West Side called Good Enough to Eat that we loved. If there is a place like that in DC, that would be perfect. We prefer unique places (as opposed to chains) that offer the usual breakfast fare- eggs, pancakes, waffles, good coffee, etc. I%26#39;m sure there are a ton of places like that, so let it flow! We will be staying at the JW Marriott right in the heart of everything.
Good breakfast place?
Actually, a breakfast place in the city isn%26#39;t that easy to come by.
BUT, having said that, there is a local place near your hotel on 10th between E and F called the Waffle Shop. Never been, but they have an infamous sister location in Arlandria, Va where the sign is misspelled ';Wafle'; Shop. That place is packed morning noon and night, so I would assume this one can%26#39;t be bad either.
That is the only ';diner'; type place I can think of in the city.
Good breakfast place?
Sherrill%26#39;s Bakery on Pennsylvania Ave SE, in the shadow of the Capitol, was a great place to eat, but they%26#39;ve since closed shop - too much competition from the chains, and Starbucks. Sholl%26#39;s Cafeteria on 20th and K Sts NW was another great place to go (they unsuccessfully relocated to 1750 Pennsylvania Ave NW, 1/2 block west of the White House, but the Breadline across the street was far more popular).
Just make sure you go to Good Enough to Eat regularly. If half the people who turned out for Scholl%26#39;s last day of operations came more regularly, they might have been able to remain in business. :(
Yes, it%26#39;s too bad about Scholl%26#39;s. I used to work a block away from them when they were on 20th. It was a great place for lunch---good, inexpensive and filling food :-(
Well as stated before, you won%26#39;t find anything like that in the immediate downtown area. However, I work in the area between Union Station and Capitol Hill and there are a few places that serve nice big breakfast. With small sit down areas. Nothing fancy.

I am pretty sure that there are more of these corner deli type places where you could get a nice breakfast like that. Just probably not the sit down type.

-The Original Pancake House (www.originalpancakehouse.com) in Downtown Bethesda is wonderful.
It%26#39;s at the Downtown Bethesda Metro station, and I come here some weekends all the way from the other side of town. This wouldn%26#39;t be a daily stop but you could go here on a Saturday or Sunday morning if you are here during that time.
There are some more places in Upper Georgetown where I would go for breakfast but they aren%26#39;t metro accessible.
I read a review somewhere at TripAdvisor, where the person raved about the same Waffle Shop that fakename mentioned. It%26#39;s right across from Ford%26#39;s Theater (where Lincoln was assasinated), on 10th Street NW, between E%26amp;F, exactly where fakename said it was.
I wonder if John Wilkes Booth ate there?
I guess they only have tables there--no booths.
If you%26#39;ve never eaten at an Original Pancake House, you owe it to yourself to go out of the way to Bethesda, like MrsMaryland does. They have the BEST pancakes I have ever tasted.
You said you didn%26#39;t want a chain--I thought the OPH was only in Las Vegas, where it always wins ';Best of the City'; awardst. But apparently they are a chain, with locations all over the country.
There%26#39;s always room for exceptions.
Warning: If you order an omelet, it%26#39;s big enough for two. And their latkas (potato pancakes) are out of this world. If there%26#39;s two of you, order the corn beef hash omelet, a short order of buttermilk pancakes, and a short order of latkas, and you%26#39;ll be pleasantly stuffed for the rest of the day.

We are very familiar with Original Pancake House. There is one not far from our house here in Dallas and we make it a point to go there as often as possible. That%26#39;s exactly the kind of food we%26#39;re looking for and it sounds like we can get just that at some of the places listed earlier in the thread.

Silver Diner (local with about 10 locations) closest would be
in Virginia (3200 Wilson Blvd.) Clarendon Metro Station (orange line)
There%26#39;s the American City Diner on upper Connecticut Ave NW, but it takes a long metro ride and/or bus ride from downtown. Bob %26amp; Edith%26#39;s Diner on Columbia Pike in Arlington is a popular hang-out, but it%26#39;s a good hike from the Pentagon Metro station. You%26#39;d probably want someplace within 5-10 minutes of your hotel.
The Reeves Bakery, right behind Metro Center and within walking distance of the Marriott, used to have a great breakfast and lunch counter (J Edgar Hoover was a big fan of their chicken salad sandwiches) until the old place was torn down and replaced with yet another soulless office highrise about a decade ago. I haven%26#39;t eaten in their new location on G Street (between 12th %26amp; 13th) because it lacked the character of the old place, but it might be worth a shot if the food is the same.
Speaking of places with character, the ';new'; Old Ebbit Grill is another option. They%26#39;re on 15th Street NW, just opposite the Treasury Building. They kept a lot of the old furniture, but now they%26#39;re in a high-priced commercial district. Consequently, the prices there aren%26#39;t cheap, but you%26#39;ll leave feeling satisfied.
Speaking of cheap, Pete%26#39;s Diner on 2nd St SE right behind the Capitol South Metro station is a great place for breakfast and lunch. It%26#39;s an old-style diner with formica tabletops run by a bunch of nice little Chinese ladies, who%26#39;ll banter with you, keep your coffee mug full, and serve you a huge American breakfast for under five bucks a person. (Check out their lunch specials if you%26#39;re going to be on Capitol Hill around noon - but be prepared for a wait - it%26#39;s a favorite among Hill staffers).
