Day trips NYC - DC: where to go: Boston, or Philly??

I will be in visiting DC and NYC during January 07 (Jan 5-11 DC; 11-17 NYC). I was thinking of going on a day trip (same day return) or 1-night-trip (next day return) to Philadelphia (from DC) or Boston (from NYC). I dont know where to go. Which city has the best and vibrant nightlife, sightseeing, gay neighborhoods, museums, shows, etc etc... We have 25 yrs old and 20 yrs old , so any recommendations. I%26#39;m looking forward on not spending a lot of money in that trip. Advices? Hints? I think taking a train will be cheaper, isnt it?

As for taking a train and having it be cheaper--I guess it depends on whether you take a regional train or the Acela. Sometimes flying can be cheaper but you have to spend lots of time going through airport security so you won%26#39;t save any travel time, IMO. It%26#39;s a tough call as to whether to visit Philly or Boston. (As a native Bostonian, I can%26#39;t help but recommend Boston LOL!). However, I%26#39;ve visited Philadelphia many times. Both cities are rich in History, have great Italian restaurants, and are very walkable. If you wanted to to to Philly from NYC, it would be a cheap ride if you took NJ transit and Septa.
