Need a hotel!

Does anyone know of a decent but not too expensive hotel located within walking distance of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel (1330 Maryland Avenue, SW ). I need to attend a conference there, but the conference hotels are sold out!

Need a hotel!

Options are pretty limited in that area. You%26#39;d probably be better off looking for a hotel near a Metro (subway) stop and commuting. The Mandarin is near (several blocks) from the Smithsonian and L%26#39;Enfant Plaza stops. I think I%26#39;d give the edge to L%26#39;Enfant as being a bit closer.

There is a hotel at L%26#39;Enfant Plaza but at one point it was getting some negatve reviews here on TA. It was a Loew%26#39;s brand but is now independent. So check the TA reviews for recent experiences.

If you could post what ';not too expensive'; means to you and the dates of your visit it would be easier to help.

Need a hotel!

I agree - other than the L%26#39;Enfant Plaza hotel, chances are you%26#39;ll need to find a hotel on metro. You may want to consider a place like the Courtyard by Marriott Convention Center. It%26#39;s about 3 blocks to Metro Center, then 2 metro stops to the Mandarin. Or consider taking a quick cab ride... for something even cheaper, you may want to consider staying in Rosslyn or Crystal City (Arlington, VA). There are several affordable (usually) options in both of those areas near metro and a quick ride to downtown/the MO.

Good luck!

The Holiday Inn Capitol is a short (i.e., about 10 minute) walk from the Mandarin Oriental but I agree with the previous posters who suggested staying elsewhere. The section of DC that%26#39;s home to the HI Capitol and the Mandarin Oriental is rather dead at night, with very few restaurants, so once your conference ended for the evening you%26#39;d probably want to head elsewhere anyway.

Thank you all for your input. I would be able to spend approx $250.00/night and am most concerned about safety. Does that help you give me more advice?

My advice is if you%26#39;re a female, you can stay anywhere in downtown DC, since I%26#39;d recommend taking a cab to and from the hotel in the evenings or after the workday once the neighborhood clears out of FCC employees.

It still depends when you%26#39;re coming. Sept/Oct are usually pretty busy with conferences so it may be hard to find something for under $250 right in the heart of downtown (like the Courtyard by Marriott that I previously suggested). Some other places to look, if you want to stay in a safe area, fairly close the to Mandarin Oriental, would be the Red Roof Inn, Embassy Suites Conv. Center, Hampton Inn Convention Center. (These are all Penn Quarter/Chinatown/Convention Center area hotels.) Or maybe the Hotel Washington - the metro is Metro Center so it%26#39;s very conveniently located for you.

If you really want to feel safe walking alone at night (like after dinner back to your hotel), consider staying near Dupont Circle at the Jurys Washington Hotel, Hotel Rouge or Hotel Topaz. It%26#39;s a bit further commute than the other hotels (I%26#39;m talking maybe 15-20 extra minutes), but there%26#39;s tons of restaurants and I would be 100% confortable walking here at night (taking the usual urban precautions of course).

And if none of those work, I%26#39;d still recommend staying in Crystal City or Rosslyn. Both of those places are safe, just across the river from DC. They%26#39;re both a bit dead at night, but Crystal City at least has a few decent restaurants. In Crystal City, there are 2 Marriotts, a Double Tree and an Embassy Suites (check the reviews). In Rosslyn, there%26#39;s a Holiday Inn, Best Western and the Marriott Key Bridge. There are others in both places, but those would hopefully be in your price range.

Good luck!

There is a new hotel opening up right in walking distance to the Mandarin. It sits right next to some Government buildings (Treasury, GSA, and nice walking distance to Holocaust Museum) I will do some research and find the name for you. It may or may not be open yet.

-Holiday Inn Capitol Hill 550 C Street is probably not exactly walking distance but you can always just catch a quick cab ride there. Also, if you are coming for a conference sponsored by your job, will they reimburse you for cab rides??????

If so, there are many selections on the opposite side of the White House where a quick cab ride wouldn%26#39;t be that bad and it%26#39;s only about 5 minutes away so you won%26#39;t need to worry about being stuck in traffic.

I%26#39;m paying for all expenses myself so would really be interested in the new hotel you referenced within walking distance of the Mandarin! Thanks for all your thoughts.
