I am traveling to DC for the first time, alone. I booked at the Hampton Inn on 6th St. My understanding is that is by the Convention Center. Can anyone advise as to the area? I will be arriving on a Saturday evening and after flying across country, I am betting I will be hungry. Will it be safe to venture out of the hotel as a single woman?
Any insight is much appreciated.

It is a busy area so with a little common sense you will be fine. There are parts that look a little run down and some characters on the streets, but during decent hours (before midnight) you will be fine.
If you feel uneasy, you can always just jump in a cab. I work down here and it is fine, but then again, I%26#39;m a guy and I%26#39;ve lived here a while.
If you want to save a little cash, jump on the Yellow line metro at National airport going toward Mt. Vernon Square and get off at Gallery Place (7th and H). If you are flying into Dulles, they have cabs ($60) or the Super Shuttle.
Plenty of places to eat since the Verizon Center is on 7th and H.
What kind of dinner spot would you like?

Hi there,
I agree with the advice that fakename gave. I also want to reassure you, because I am a woman who lives in that neighborhood (roughly across the street from your hotel), and I feel quite safe there.
Thanks so much! I was feeling a little nervous. I am from a pretty small town, so this is definately a different experience for me.
As for what I would like to eat......something casual and quick! I doubt that I will be too picky, other than no fast food!
