Train or tours from DC to Philadelphia

Traveling in November, would like some info on tours or maybe on our own to Philadelphia to see the Liberty Bell, single parent and grandparent with two teenagers.Any train schedule info would be helpful,we would like to go and return the same day.

Train or tours from DC to Philadelphia

Getting you to Philly--Amtrak trains leave pretty much every hour from Union Station. View schedules at http://www.amtrak.com

You might want to post in the Philly forum for what to do once you get there. We%26#39;ve done the Double Decker bus tour and were happy with that.

Train or tours from DC to Philadelphia

It%26#39;s quite easy to take the train, although it can add up for 4 people. Check www.amtrak.com for schedules and prices from Washington Union Station to Philadelphia 30th Street Station. Alternatively, you could take Greyhound - www.greyhound.com. The final choice would be to drive. It%26#39;s not a bad drive - will take about 3 hours and you can park somewhere right around Independence Hall. Even if it costs $40 for the car rental, $20 to park and say $50 in gas, it%26#39;s still probably a bit less than the bus, but of course, you don%26#39;t get the convenience of reading a magazine or tourbook while someone else drives you...

As stated before the train would be the better option and the most expensive. From DC it%26#39;s about a 2.5 hour drive to Philadelphia if you drive.

Check out the Philadelphia Forum for specifics on the tours for that area. I like the Benjamin Franklin Museum and the area with the Liberty Bell would be nice. You might be better off doing your own tour. With the bus tours you really can%26#39;t go into any museums and spend quality time. You are on someone elses schedule. Parking in Philly isn%26#39;t as bad as NY and it probably is a little better than some parts of DC. But you can just park the car in an all day parking lot/garage and take a ';hike';/ walk or cab ride everywhere else. That%26#39;s what I do when we drive up to NY for 1 day.

Thanks this is great!

Amtrak apparently has a special that I saw on another board. I hope I%26#39;m allowed to ';copy and paste'; this here (if not, very sorry!).

Buy 1 Train Fare Get 1 Train Fare Free.

Here is the info:

Code: H568

This code doesn%26#39;t work on sleeper or Auto train. Only works on train fare. Blackout days: JANUARY 13-16,2006; FEBRUARY 17-20, 2006; APRIL 13-17, 2006; MAY 26-29, 2006; SEPTEMBER 01-04, 2006; OCTOBER 06-09, 2006; NOVEMBER 09-12,2006; NOVEMBER 21-28, 2006; code Expires Dec. 6th 2006

Another Amtrak discount code to use when traveling along the Northeast Corridor with a travel party of 3-6 people:

H620

First 2 adults pay full fare; everyone else gets 75% discount :-) Note, however, you can%26#39;t use this discount code on the Acella or Metroliner trains %26amp; reservations must be made (and paid for) at least 3 days in advance.

Besides all the wonderful TA advice, check www.gophila.com for tour and itinerary info. You could pick and choose what you do, but Day 1 of the ';Historic Fun'; itinerary is probably all you%26#39;d have time for. It covers alot of ground. I just have to put in a plug for Jim%26#39;s (400 South Street) if you want a cheesesteak for lunch or dinner. The teens will probably like South Street if you want to take a break from the history.

kcp5,
